Keith Richards Is Sober?

Keith Richards

We never thought we would publish these words, but Keith Richards has apparently given up alcohol.

According to Britain's The Sun tabloid, Richards has quit drinking and hasn't touched booze in four months after his doctor basically read him the riot act.

Fellow Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood's alcoholism has affected his life in major ways over the last few months, and this also reportedly contributed to Richards' decision to become a teetotaler.

Wood recently started drinking again and left his wife of 23 years, Jo Wood, to have an affair with 21-year-old Ekaterina Ivanova. They've since split up.

"There's no guarantees [Richards]'ll stay off it — but he's doing really well so far," a source told The Sun.

"He has always quite enjoyed the fact that he seemed to be able to carry on drinking as much as he liked with no real negative impact on his health.

"But he has watched Ronnie fall well and truly off the wagon last year and he doesn't like what he sees. Plus he has started to feel for the first time like it might do him some good to give up the booze for a while."

In 2007, Richards said he would never stop drinking because he had outlived several doctors who had told him to stop.

"They keep telling me to stop drinking, but I can't be bothered," he said, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

"It's like, 'You don't know me, I know me.' The people who've told me to stop doing this and that and they've croaked.

"Not that I want to brag about it, but I mean, I've had about three doctors who told me, 'If you carry on like this, you will be dead in months.' I went to their funerals."

In 2005, Richards suffered a brain hemorrhage and had brain surgery after he fell out of a palm tree while on a booze-soaked trip to Fiji with Wood.
