It took almost a month, but we finally have a new release topping the campus chart this week: Owen Pallett's Heartland makes a 26 position move to grab the #1 spot on the chart for the week Jan. 17 to 23.
Radio stations across the country were still stick in that 2009 groove until last week. Hopefully, we can now move forward into 2010 with some highly anticipated releases.
Woodhands' Remorsescapade rises eight places to take over the #2 position, pushing You Say Party! We Say Die!'s XXXX down a place to #3 in its 15th week on the campus chart.
Charlotte Gainsbourg's IRM jumps a spot to #4 with
Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra's Kollaps Tradixionales debuting at #5. This arrival gives the Montreal collective with the ever-changing moniker the Chart Sizzler Award of the week.
A couple of former #1 albums follow in the next two positions. Tegan And Sara's Sainthood drops three places to #6, with Tom Waits' Glitter And Doom Live slipping six spots to #7. The Daptone Gold compilation jumps four spots to #8 followed by Animal Collective's Fall Be Kind falling five positions to #9. Following Pallett's rise into top 10 in its second week, Vampire Weekend's Contra jumps 18 places to #10.
There are a few more new entries this week, but probably less than the usual number. Woodpigeon's Die Stadt Muzikanten enters at #13, followed by Tonstartssbandht's An When at #25, Neil Young's Dreamin' Man Live '92 at #29 and Hot Little Rocket's eponymous release at #30.
For the first time in chart history, there are two different artists
with two CDs on the weekly campus chart. Vic Chesnutt has two albums on
the chart simultaneously, with Skitter On Take-Off dropping 17 spots to land at #28 and At The Cut falling 17 positions to #37. The appearance of Tonstartssbandht's An When accompanies their album Dick Nights, which rises four spots from last week to land at #43. Acts have had two albums on the chart at the same time a few times in the past, most notably with Spookey Ruben's Bed and Breakfast releases hitting the top 10 in 2001 and Tom Waits' Alice and Blood Money inhabiting the top of the chart during early 2002. But never have two separate artists done so at the same time.
It's a mixed bag on the five specialty charts this week, with a significant number of new entries. Instead of listing the top albums, which haven't changed much from last week, let's highlight a couple of debuts on each top 10 chart.
Three of the specialty charts feature two debuts in the identical positions.
Six Feet Under's Graveyard Classics 3 enters the Metal/Punk chart at #7, followed by The Devin Townsend Project's Addicted at #10.
On the Hip Hop chart, Mastrzofthayoonavrce's eponymous album arrives at #7 and Eekwol's Niso follows at #10.
Les Gitans De Sarajevo's Balkan Dance enters at #7 on the World/Folk top 10, with the Singapore A-Go-Go compilation debuting at #10.
A trio of new entries dominate the top of the Jazz/Blues chart. Eri Yamamoto Trio's In Each Day, Something Good arrives at #2, followed by Chicago Underground Duo's Boca Negra at #3 and the self-titled release from Chicago Goes West at #4.
There are four new entries on the Electronic top 10. Futureless' Futura leads, debuting at #3. Deadmau5's At Play Volume 2 enters at #5. Sikransit's Spanish Gold sits at #7 and Alice Russell's Pot Of Gold Remixes holds down the #9 position.
