Fucked Up Diss Sonic Youth In Song

Fucked Up will not put up with being called "Dude core," Kim Gordon.

The Sonic Youth singer/bassist and singer/guitarist Thurston Moore reportedly referred to the band as such in an interview with VBS.tv's Soft Focus, and now Fucked Up have hit back.

London music photographer Ben Rayner recently told Vice magazine he had written and recorded a Sonic Youth diss track with Fucked Up guitarist Ben "Young Governor" Cook and drummer Jonah "Mr. Jo" Falco in response. It was reportedly put down during All Tomorrow's Parties' Nightmare Before Christmas gig in England last month. Rayner also says the title of the tune, "Cranking To Sonic Youth," inspired a zine he made about his experiences at ATP.

"We thought it was a good idea to go into the recording studio in Butlins [Holiday Resort in Minehead, England, which hosts ATP]," Rayner told the magazine.

"Usually the studio is for dudes who go in and sing karaoke in front of a green screen, but they happened to have a shitty Strat copy, so we went in there and recorded five songs in an hour. They should be getting released in the coming months."

There's apparently an entire EP's worth of recordings, Rayner says. Rayner described "cranking" as being what happens when someone "is crying and wanking at the same time." "Cranking To Sonic Youth" contains lyrics like "Cranking to Sonic Youth/Goo in your hand" and "You love Thurston and you love Kim/You love art and you are thin."

In regards to the "dude core" thing, it should probably be noted Fucked Up vocalist Damian "Pink Eyes" Abraham majored in women's studies at university. Also, proceeds from sales of Fucked Up's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" single are going to three organizations seeking to raise awareness about missing Aboriginal women. How's that for "dude core"?

Fucked Up's Couple Tracks: Singles 2002-2009 compilation comes out Tuesday (Jan. 26).
