Is the Twilight franchise this decade's version of Molly Ringwald films? Good God, we hope not, but in any case, Death Cab — who leant their talents to the New Moon soundtrack last year — are big fans of late director John Hughes.
The filmmaker, who passed away last year and who helmed '80s classics like Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty In Pink, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science and wrote many others, was given a tribute on Friday (Jan. 15) night at the 2010 Critics Choice Awards.
Death Cab For Cutie were among those who honoured him, performing a cover of Simple Minds' "Don't You (Forget About Me)," which appeared on the soundtrack to The Breakfast Club.
"We are truly proud to help pay tribute to the late John Hughes," bassist Nick Harmer said in a Jan. 8 blog post about the band's performance.
"His films were important waypoints for us to use as we navigated the uncertain waters of growing up and even now still give us so much perspective, insight and laughter about those uncomfortable years. We honor him and will continue to celebrate him with our music and through his films for years to come."
Drummer Jason McGerr told MTV News he thought Hughes was "the captain of our youthful revolution" prior to the band's performance.
"Every movie he has ever made is ingrained in our brains, and 'Don't You (Forget About Me)' is a song we all fell in love with," McGerr said.
