Elliott Brood Soundtracked Film Screening At Sundance

Elliott Brood have written the music for Grown Up Movie Star, a film that will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City, Utah later this month.

The film, which is directed by Adriana Maggs, is set in Newfoundland. Maggs asked Elliott Brood if they'd be interested in providing her with some unreleased material to use in the film, but that ended up including demos, instrumentals, background music and sound effects. The band recorded the soundtrack last summer.

"It was a different thing for us, but a great process," guitarist/bassist Casey Laforet says. "We're really happy with the end result.

"The great part is the setting of the film. Our music would normally be associated with westerns or cowboy films, but it's great to hear them set in a modern story. Story has always been the most important thing in songwriting for us, and I think that's why we wanted to be a part of this film."

Grown Up Movie Star was shot in Flatrock and St. John's, Nfld. It stars Shawn Doyle (Big Love) and features a cameo from former This Hour Has 22 Minutes comedian Mary Walsh.

Doyle plays a fallen NHL star who was derailed by a drug conviction. When his wife leaves him and travels to Hollywood in an attempt to become a movie star, he's left with the task of raising his two rambunctious daughters and realizes he's gay.

This year's Sundance Film Festival runs Jan. 21 to 31. Grown Up Movie Star will open in St. John's and Toronto on Jan. 29.
