David Byrne, Fatboy Slim Release Imelda Marcos Concept Album Details

Here's the deal: Tori Amos, Martha Wainwright, Santigold, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper and a host of other friends have come together to contribute to a double album of dance tunes.

It's a concept album about Imelda Marcos, the lavish former first lady of the Phillipines, known for her extensive shoe collection.

The collaborative project is headed by former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and Fatboy Slim (a.k.a Norman Cook) and is titled Here Lies Love. It's a 22-track beast coupled with a 100-page booklet, and will be released by Todomundo/Nonesuch Records on Feb. 23.

The album will explore the theme of unadulterated extravagance — which is natural, considering Imelda and her husband, former president Ferdinand E. Marcos, once amassed $28 billion U.S. in foreign debt. It is believed Imelda Marcos had acquired up to 3,000 pairs of shoes by the time she and her husband fled the Philippines to Hawaii after Ferdinand Marcos' regime was toppled in 1986.

Byrne says he wanted to explore Imelda Marcos' motives and her $5 million U.S. spending sprees.

“The story I am interested in is about asking what drives a powerful person — what makes them tick? How do they make and then remake themselves?" Byrne wrote on his website.

"I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great if — as this piece would be principally composed of clubby dance music — one could experience it in a club setting? Could one bring a 'story' and a kind of theater to the disco? Was that possible? If so, wouldn't that be amazing!"
