Courtney Love no longer has legal custody of Frances Bean Cobain, her daughter with late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
Wendy O'Connor, Kurt Cobain's mother, and Kimberly Dawn Cobain, his sister, were appointed legal guardians of Frances Bean Cobain on Friday (Dec. 11).
"Courtney wants to say she loves her daughter and she's the most important thing in her life," Love's lawyer, Keith Fink, told TMZ on Monday (Dec. 14).
According to the website, they will take personal care of the 17-year-old and will also watch over her financial well-being. But they don't have any power over Frances Bean Cobain's trust fund, which was set up after Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994.
A hearing about custody over Frances Bean Cobain will be held Feb. 10, according to People.com.
But don't think Love has lost custody of her daughter because of a drug relapse. Fink says that isn't the case.
He told People.com Love has "been clean for years and is perfectly fine," and the court's decision is about "Frances preferring to live with her grandmother at this time."
"Frances is 17 and a strong-willed child, and this is a decision she made on her own," Fink told the website. "No matter what, Courtney loves her daughter more than anything in the world."
O'Connor was previously appointed Frances Bean Cobain's guardian in 2003 after Love attempted to break into her ex-boyfriend, manager and producer Jim Barber's apartment. Police charged Love with being under the influence of a controlled substance and within four hours of her being released on bail she was treated for an OxyContin overdose.
Frances Bean Cobain was placed in O'Connor's care and authorities ordered Love to have a 72-hour hospital evaluation. Instead, she left the hospital and said she would attend rehab. That didn't happen, but Love eventually did end up going to rehab after the release of 2004's America's Sweetheart.
Love regained custody of Frances Bean Cobain in 2005. She later admitted to using drugs on her probation, but Frances Bean Cobain remained in her care.
