David Cross, Kevin Drew Imitate Bono On Fucked Up's "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Charity Cover

Fucked Up

Fucked Up have kept their Polaris Music Prize promise to record a holiday season benefit album to raise funds and awareness about crimes against aboriginal women, and have released their star-studded cover of "Do They Know It's Christmas" for download on iTunes.

The recording was funded entirely by the $20,000 Polaris Muse Prize winnings, which Fucked Up won for their album, The Chemistry Of Common Life.

The band enlisted the help of their friends Yo La Tengo, GZA, Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend), Bob Mould (Husker Du), Tegan And Sara, Andrew W.K., Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio), David Cross and Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene) to reinterpret the '80s charity classic. Cross and Drew, notably, cover the part of the song originally done by U2's Bono, while Tegan And Sara take on the George Michael section.

The track is available here, and all proceeds will benefit three Canadian organizations dedicated to bringing an end to the epidemic of missing and murdered native women.

The groups, Justice For Missing And Murdered Indigenous Women (Montreal), DTES Power Of Women Group (Vancouver) and Sisters In Spirit (Ottawa), were all chosen by Fucked Up vocalist Damian "Pink Eyes" Abraham, who said in a statement that it's "hard to find a balance between the song being a fun, playful holiday classic and the reason we're putting it out, to benefit organizations dealing with a deadly, serious issue."

"Since 1980, there have been 520 known cases of missing or murdered Aboriginal women across Canada and many believe the true number to be significantly higher," Abraham said.

"If compared to the rest of the population their death and disappearance rate would be equivalent to over 18,000 Canadian women and girls missing and murdered. Approximately 50 per cent of the murders and disappearances have occurred during or since 2000."

Fucked Up's version of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" will also be released as a seven-inch single with an unreleased Fucked Up B-side in February. The band will also release a compilation of rare singles. Couple Tracks on Jan. 26 through Matador.
