Weezer Frontman Hospitalized After Bus Crash, Tour Dates Cancelled

Weezer have cancelled their remaining dates set for 2009 after frontman Rivers Cuomo was injured when the band's bus crashed this weekend.

According to a blog post on Weezer's website by the band's friend, Karl Koch, Weezer were en route to Boston from Toronto early Sunday (Dec. 6) morning when their tour bus skidded on ice. It then "violently fishtailed" across a few lanes of traffic on I-90 in New York, went over the right shoulder's guardrail and ended up in a ditch.

Cuomo was reportedly sleeping on the bus with his wife and daughter, their nanny and his assistant, Sarah.

The post describes the interior of the bus post-accident as "a chaotic mess with broken glass, smashed glasses and plates, food and clothing items strewn everywhere, as well as the refrigerator flying off the wall and many drawers coming right out of their slots, spewing their contents everywhere."

According to the post, Cuomo woke up after being "tossed around violently" and landing back on his mattress. Cuomo was immobile and could not speak because of "pain in his ribcage," and the bus door was jammed shut. Emergency personnel got it open when they arrived and took Cuomo, his wife and assistant to hospital.

Cuomo's wife and Sarah were both thrown out of their bunks onto the floor during the accident. Cuomo's wife was not injured, but Sarah reportedly sustained two fractured ribs and a fractured lower vertebra. She's since been discharged from hospital.

"I couldn't believe what was happening in front of me, as Rivers lay so helpless, shivering in the center of the chaos, and meanwhile the sun was coming up and revealing an utterly beautiful light covering of snow on the surrounding trees," Koch wrote.

"I don't know how to describe the wave of awfulness that gripped me as I watched, but adrenalin took over and the next thing I knew I was in the passenger seat of an ambulance transporting Rivers and Sarah to the hospital in Amsterdam, NY, about 10 miles from there."

Cuomo remains in hospital and is "under observation," according to the post. He suffered three cracked ribs in the crash, was left with "very painful internal damage," and also hurt his lower leg. He is not expected to have surgery for his injuries, but Weezer have cancelled their remaining dates in December because of the accident.

No ticket refund information is available right now, but Weezer and sales outlets will have further details about how to obtain refunds and rescheduling of the dates in the future.
