Good news for harmony-starved Fleet Foxes fans: the band are currently in the midst of recording a new full-length album set for release in 2010.
Robin Pecknold, the group's songwriter, says he's in the early stages of recording the album. To the satisfaction of rock historians, he wrote the song on hallowed ground, channeling the ghosts of Seattle's past.
"We rented a new space in Seattle," he told Pitchfork. "We were looking for a space in town, and I asked Josh [Rosenfeld] from Barsuk... He said that Death Cab were moving out of their space and the space that they were in was the space where they recorded all the Sub Pop records from 1986 to 1992 [including Nirvana's 1989 Bleach debut album]."
But you might be in for a surprise if you've been lulled into blissful content by the band's 2008 self-titled debut or the Sun Giant EP.
Pecknold says he's taking a different approach to the Foxes' sun-drenched melodies and zillion-part harmonies. Citing a touch of self-awareness, he's expecting to create a much different album — one with less bounce.
"I listened to the first record again, and I was kind of nonplussed," he said. "Some of it I was into, or I could see why we did that at that time. But some of it we would just never do again.
"When I was listening to the first album, it was kind of like research," he continued. "I was listening to the record for the first time in a really long time. When I was listening to it, I felt like I didn't get a chance to breathe. There was a lot of 'too upbeat.' I guess people think we're already kind of a mellow band, so maybe the next album will be pretty boring to most people."
Pecknold says the as-yet-untitled Fleet Foxes sophomore album should be out in the latter half of 2010.
