What do you get when you mix members of Dinosaur Jr., Witch and Cobra Verde, Robert Pollard's former backing band? Sweet Apple, that's what.
Sweet Apple is a new band featuring Dinosaur Jr. frontman and Witch drummer J Mascis, Witch bassist Dave Sweetapple, former Cobra Verde singer John Petkovic and guitarist Tim Parnin.
Sweet Apple features Mascis on drums and guitar, Parnin on guitar, Petkovic on vocals and guitar and Sweetapple on bass. They recently signed to Tee Pee Records and will release their Love And Desperation debut album on March 30.
The disc was recorded in Cleveland and Massachusetts and was mixed by John Agnello (Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth) and Don Depew (Cobra Verde, Guided By Voices).
Sweet Apple formed after Petkovic traveled to New England and met up with Sweetapple and Mascis. The latter two musicians told Petkovic to write some songs because they were into starting a band with him, and they began working on Love And Desperation after recruiting Parnin.
"I hadn't even played the guitar for months," Petkovic says. "And then, out of the blues, there were all these songs just coming out.
"I tell people that I saved John's life by starting this band," Mascis says. "But they don't believe me."
Sweet Apple are set to shoot a video for opening track "Do You Remember" and will tour extensively in support of Love And Desperation in the new year. They plan to play the South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas in March.
