Alanis Morissette's A Pothead

Alanis Morissette
Alanis Morissette has revealed that she loves marijuana.

Morissette recently told cannabis culture magazine High Times that she uses weed to promote her creativity, but she says she does so in moderation.

"As an artist, there's a sweet jump-starting quality to it for me," she said. "I've often felt telepathic and receptive to inexplicable messages my whole life. I can stave those off when I'm not high. When I'm high — well, they come in and there's less of a veil, so to speak. So if ever I need some clarity... or a quantum leap in terms of writing something, it's a quick way for me to get to it."

Morissette's interview is reportedly accompanied by a picture of her in a California marijuana garden.

Her current boyfriend, Tom Ballanco, is a medical marijuana advocate and she says he first turned her on to the drug.

"I've always resonated with people who are on the front lines [of marijuana advocacy]," Morissette told High Times. "I've always felt that way about Tom and about the community around him — Woody Harrelson, Alicia Silverstone. I have a lot of friends around me who are very courageous and willing to 'come out' — and Tom is definitely beyond the front lines. Any fears that I had about cannabis were quickly assuaged. Now I feel like a professional!"

Appropriately, Morissette guest stars in the new season of Showtime's Weeds television show. She played an obstetrician treating widowed housewife-turned-marijuana-dealer Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker). The season wrapped up on Showtime this August, but is still airing on Showcase in Canada. The season finale will air Sunday (Dec. 6) at 10 p.m. ET.

Morissette, who recently ran in the New York City Marathon, is working on a new "non-linear book." Some of that sticky-icky should help with that whole jumping from topic to topic thing.

Morissette is also working on the follow-up to 2008's Flavors Of Entanglement, though it's not known when it will be released.
