If we had a dollar for every time a record reviewer called Sigur Ros "cinematic," we'd have our own yachts. Still, there's merit behind the description — and it was only a matter of time before they lived up to it.
According to their website, the Icelandic post-rock quartet have contributed eight tracks to Clive Owen's latest film, The Boys Are Back, a British drama released last month (apparently Thin Lizzy didn't fit the tone of the flick).
Scott Hicks, the film's director, says that he unintentionally stumbled upon Sigur Ros while putting the film together.
"Initially, I used their songs as a temporary score, but it was working so perfectly that I decided to approach the band directly to see if we could license the music," he told the Iceland On Screen blog.
"I was forewarned that they were extremely picky about what they would allow their music to be used for, but I went to Iceland to screen [it] for them, and they simply loved the film."
The songs are largely taken from Sigur Ros' 2008 album, Med Sud I Eryum Vid Spilum Endalaust, and Riceboy Sleeps, Sigur Ros frontman Jon Thor Birgisson's side-project with his partner, Alex Somers.
Sigur Ros join the growing list of post-rock acts contributing music to major films, such as Explosions In The Sky, who scored 2004's Friday Night Lights, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor, who provided tracks for 28 Days Later.
