Here's probably the weirdest news you'll read this week.
Depeche Mode's Martin Gore has been subpoenaed in a video gamer's lawsuit against Activision Blizzard and their World Of Warcraft game.
A San Francisco gamer is suing the company for $1 million U.S. in punitive damages. He takes issue with World Of Warcraft's $14.99 U.S. monthly subscription fee, according to gamespot.com.
He also says the game's resurrection and travel components end up unnecessarily costing gamers money. The website states that the gamer also has a problem with paying fees for things like changing characters' names, ethnicities, factions or servers.
But here's the real doozy.
The plaintiff references an EverQuest player's 2001 suicide and says it was due to alienation and mental health issues.
He says he's suffering from similar issues like depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and, panic attacks and Crohn's disease. The suit states the plaintiff "doesn't want to end up like [the EverQuest player] did as he relies on video games heavily for the little ongoing happiness he can achieve in this life, via the gaming medium."
Here's where Gore fits in. Gamespot.com reports the plaintiff wants Gore to take the stand and talk about alienation, since he's kind of an expert in that field and "he himself has known to be sad, lonely, and alienated, as can be seen in the songs he writes."
According to the website, the plaintiff also wants actress Winona Ryder to be subpoenaed because she enjoys the book The Catcher In The Rye and can demonstrate "how alienation in the book can tie to alienation in real live [sic] video games such as World Of Warcraft."
Oooooookaaaaaay...
