CALGARY — It's ridiculously windy in Calgary right now, which is why Mother Mother singer/guitarist Ryan Guldemond is perfectly content staying in his cushy hotel room.
"Often times on tour it feels more appropriate and healthy to get some exercise and eat good meals," he explains.
"There's so much running around and exploring different parts of the city that you're yearning for a place to sit still."
The Vancouver via Quadra Island band are in town supporting Matthew Good on his cross-Canada jaunt, including Wednesday's (Nov. 18) show at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Guldemond can't believe how well the shows have been going so far.
"Our expectations for this tour were high and reality has definitely outdone our expectations," he says.
"The shows have been quite successful — sold out almost every night. Matt Good and crew have been very welcoming to us as well. Their fans are fans of high energy rock. We try to tailor our set to be a bit harder and more punchy.
"At the same time, we represent Mother Mother as best we can. There's a lot of delicacy and quiet parts of songs that work really well with the venues we're playing in."
Mother Mother fans will be happy to know the band are working on several new songs. They'll start the recording process early in the New Year and hope to have something out by late summer/early fall 2010.
"The music has definitely changed. It's inevitable. We're all humans and you grow as a human from year to year," says Guldemond.
"It'll be similar, but different [than the songs on 2008's O My Heart]. I'm still the chief songwriter, but there's more collaboration going on and that will introduce some subtle new flavors in the music."
Perez Hilton once called the quintet "one of the most exciting bands coming out of Canada." Although Guldemond was flattered by the comment, he believes such praise needs to be taken in stride.
"When anybody says anything about something you do, both positive and negative, it will affect you. I don't think it affects us a band; we always stay true to what we feel.
"It was great that he found us exciting and it was inspiring, but at the same time, there are some pretty harsh critics out there as well. It all has to be taken with a grain of salt."
A new Mother Mother record may be almost a year from release, but Guldemond is already excited about the creative direction the new material is heading in.
"It'll be more of the same, but much better. You're going to have to listen and make your own judgments. It's a variety of different sounds and ideas that are pushing new boundaries.
"Only time will tell how it's going to shape up."
