TORONTO — Frank Carter, the frontman for breakout British hardcore rockers Gallows, announced from the stage last night that the band would be joining the massive Billy Talent/Alexisonfire/Against Me! tour that's crossing Canada in March 2010.

In self-deprecating style, Carter followed that up by suggesting it would be an experiment in what happens when "a bad rock band plays arenas."

If last night's show was any indication, Gallows — who were opening for AFI at Toronto's Sound Academy — shouldn't have much to worry about.

The band ripped through songs from their two albums, Grey Britain and Orchestra Of Wolves. For about half the set, Carter set up his mic stand in the middle of the Sound Academy's floor and encouraged a massive circle pit to develop around him while he screamed away. Later, Carter prompted the pit-goers to create a giant human pyramid which he climbed on top of before leaping back off the precarious pile of hardcore flesh.

His banter was also spot-on, too. He declared Tulsa, Okla. "right backwards" and gave shout-outs to the aforementioned Billy Talent and Alexisonfire, along with Cancer Bats and Fucked Up.

Incidentally, Damian "Pink Eyes" Abraham, the lead singer of Polaris Music Prize-winners Fucked Up, watched most of the Gallows set from side-stage, and almost made a cameo on stage at Carter's prodding during their last song.

best use of a human pyramid since the rheostatics at massey hall.

also probably the best thing to ever happen at the sound academy.
