Hot Hot Heat have finally finished recording Future Breeds, the follow-up to 2007's Happiness Ltd. and have made two new tracks from the album available for free download through their website.
Singer/keyboardist Steve Bays apologized to fans for "taking so long to finish" the disc in a Nov. 4 post on the band's website, but said Future Breeds is "by far" his "favourite thing we've ever done."
You can download the title track to Future Breeds, along with "JFK's LSD," here.
"We wanted to re-structure our approach to the band, starting with building a studio where we could do everything together (rehearse, write, record, mix, hand out... and pretty much live), all the way up to the kind of songs we wanted to write, and how we would release them," Bays wrote.
"I had become uninspired by the old school structure of rehearse, write, demo, wait for the label to give you money to record, tour and then do it again in two years. I wanted to record WAY more often, have it sound WAY weirder, and make the demos — the INITIAL ideas — BE the record!"
So to combat his boredom, Bays and the group built a studio named Tugboat Place, Bays taught himself to engineer and the band spent months recording Future Breed at their new studio. Bays also mentioned the existence of "fly on the wall" videos that have been shot for "Future Breeds" and "JFK's LSD," which follow the band around Vancouver. You can see them below.
There's no word on when Future Breeds will be officially out, but Bays says the band plan to tour next year. For now, you can see the band "sometime in the month of February 2010 in or around Vancouver," but they can't officially announce anything about the gig yet.
