Long Island, N.Y. emo-rockers Brand New have come a long way since their debut, Your New Favourite Weapon.
Where that album was a fairly straightforward blend of pop-punk and emo, subsequent releases like new album Daisy have pushed the band further afield with increasingly cacophonous and ambient sounds.
But lead singer Jesse Lacey says the thing that remains consistent across all four of their releases is that most of the bands songs — rockers and ballads alike — are born on acoustic guitar.
"Vinnie [Accardi, guitarist] brought that up like two weeks ago," says Lacey. "He just thought that was hilarious that he's never written a song on electric guitar. I don't think I really have, either."
The reason, Accardi explains, is due more to logistics than creative choice.
"We own a storage space where all of our gear stays, but we don't own a practice space," he says. "So pretty much the only way that I play music at home is on a guitar that I got through a special at Sam Ash because I got a trumpet. That's the only thing that sits around my house.
"I'm too lazy to go and set up my gear at home, so everything just winds up being written on acoustic guitar. It's funny to hear the song be finished and it's this loud, obnoxious squealing thing and it's like, 'Where did the song go? On my couch in my living room it sounded way nicer and prettier.'"
