Shout Out Out Out Out: Nothing Pun-y About Opening For Daft Punk Tribute Bands

Shout Out Out Out Out

Edmonton electro-army Shout Out Out Out Out are doing really well.

Their second album, Reintegration Time, was an extremely well received piece of dreamy electronic disco-rave-rock and has kept the band touring across the country for most of 2009.

Yet despite the glory of being in a successful six-piece band soon to attempt their fate in the U.S., SOOOO still live the life of band just starting out. They recently opened for a Daft Punk tribute band.

"It was what it was," synth wizard and vocoder addict Nik Kozub says with resolve. "The band was called Homage A Daft Punk. They were called Daft Punk tribute band! It was two dudes dressed as Daft Punk and they did a laptop DJ set of their songs.

"The crowd went fucking bananas. I have to admit, it was a little depressing. We set up all this gear and then play a show. People were into it and stuff, but then the Daft Punk tribute comes out and blows them away."

And they don't quite pack 'em in every province. At least not yet, anyway. And all the members still have jobs back in Edmonton, their hometown no one plans on leaving anytime soon.

"I run my studio and do remix work," Kozub says. "Jason [Troock] works at a record store, Lyle [Bell] does graphic design work for a weekly entertainment paper and Gravy works in a small independent drum shop.

"Will [Zimmerman] and Clint [Frazier] do construction, painting, whatever. We all have ways to make money when we're home. We're certainly not making the big bucks yet."

Fret not; despite all their humble happenings, planet SOOOO is a very healthy and happy one. They have a loyal following with cult-like cheers happening at almost every stop they land. Now on the final leg of the Reintegration Time tour, the boys have perfected their latest batch of epic, new wave rave choons. Kozub has been giving dancers a mix of both old and new at shows.

"We'll be playing a bunch of stuff from the new album, a few things from the old album and probably at least one newer space jam," Kozub says.

"We're excited about playing a lot of the stuff on the new record and make sure we keep the better tunes from the older record on there."

Better, though, is news of exciting side-projects.

"Right now, I'm actually working on my own record as well. I've been pretty immersed in writing for that. It's under the under the name Paronomasiac and that's a word for someone who puns convulsively. I'm definitely a big Pun Rocker."
