TORONTO — Matthew Good doesn't necessarily agree with CHARTattack when it comes to the seriousness business that is doing stories on him cutting his lawn and getting a kitteh.
"To me, it seemed kind of pointless," he says with a shrug. "That's just me."
But even though he doesn't share our vision, he was kind enough to give us an update on two of our favourite Good-related stories when we talked to him about his forthcoming album, Vancouver.
First of all, his lawn — the mowing of which we first reported back in June — is doing well, although he's somewhat less involved with the process now.
"I don't really take care of it much. My girlfriend does most of that, being the gardener that she is," he says.
Good spends far more time with Eli the cat, although his relationship with the feline has taken a turn few could have expected when we reported on the singer/songwriter's new foster kitty last November.
While Eli got along just fine with the musician's dogs and became a beloved member of the family, Good's new home proved too precarious for the curious and adventurous Eli.
"The way that our bedroom and master bathroom is designed, he could get up on the counter and he could get up into some places where we keep certain things," he explains. "And also, we have a balcony that runs from upstairs that looks over our living room and it's really high, a good 16 feet, and I kept catching him jumping off the edge of the railing.
"Cats do that kind of thing and I understand, but one day I was standing in the hallway and he comes burning down the hall and just straight over the goddamned railing, right downstairs. And I'm just like, one day that cat's going to do that and he's going to wipe out into the couch. And it's freaking me out, like, this cat's going to freaking hurt himself."
A happy compromise was reached when Good's parents, who live a few blocks away in a more cat-friendly abode, agreed to take care of the spirited kitty. The new arrangement seems to have turned out well for everyone involved. Good no longer has to worry about daredevil stunts gone horribly awry, his parents adore the cat and Eli gets regular visits from his former owner as well as plenty of attention from his new housemates.
"When it comes to any animal, my concern is for the animal's well-being first and foremost," says Good. "I see him, he knows who I am. He has a great life with my parents. He sleeps with my mom. It worked out perfectly."
Matthew Good's Vancouver album comes out Oct. 6. Stay tuned for more Good news next week.
