The New York City medical examiner's office has ruled DJ AM died from an accidental overdose of prescription medications and cocaine.

The DJ whose real name was Adam Goldstein survived a horrific plane crash that killed four and injured Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker in September 2008, but passed away under suspicious circumstances in August.

Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the New York medical examiner, said DJ AM's cause of death has officially been ruled  an "accidental drug overdose due to combined effects of cocaine, Vicodin, oxycodone, Ativan, Klonopin, Xanax, Benadryl and levamisole," on Tuesday.

DJ AM had been found barricaded inside the bedroom of his downtown Manhattan apartment face down on his bed with a crack pipe and prescription drugs found near his body on Aug. 28.

Those close to DJ AM reported he had been suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder and overwhelming feelings of survivor's guilt after the accident. It's suspected his background as a drug addict and emotional reaction to the crash may have led to his untimely death.

DJ AM aimed to use his MTV reality TV series, Gone Too Far, as a means to help families and friends of addicts stage interventions for their loved ones to help them kick their habits. MTV has not yet made a decision about whether to air the series following DJ AM's death.

DJ AM was considered one of the decade's most prominent mash-up DJs. He was once engaged to Nicole Richie and co-owned the Hollywood club LAX. He was also known for his collaboration with Barker as TRV$DJAM.
