90210 Soundtrack To Feature Raconteurs, Santigold Collabs

Indie kids will be crying into their blogs as more of their bands get co-opted when CBS Records releases Soundtrack 90210, a soundtrack — you guessed it — to the next gen 90210 television show.

The compilation will feature 14 new tracks, including collaborations between Adele with The Raconteurs and N.E.R.D with Santigold, along with songs by the likes of Owl City, Mute Math, Stars Crashing Cars and Jet. All the songs have been specially recorded for the show's 2009-2010 season.

Using a hit television series as a means to promote emerging "indie" artists is by no means a new tactic. It's not only less expensive to use songs from this pool of artists, but it's also a means for music buffs to share their favourite artists with a greater population.

These combined factors have admittedly created some truly excellent soundtracks in recent years while also effectively killing hipster hard-ons over who knows the most obscure music. And suddenly eighth grade kids know who Of Montreal are.

The O.C. pioneered this trend using artists like Mates Of State, Hot Chip and Phantom Planet as talking points for its characters, in one episode even featuring a live set by Modest Mouse. Desperate Housewives recently had Tokyo Police Club on the show and Gossip Girl has featured the likes of Crystal Castles, The Ting Tings and The Kills.

Here are the artists and songs on the 90210 soundtrack:

Adele with The Raconteurs — "Many Shades Of Black"
N.E.R.D. featuring Santigold — "Soldier"
Jet — "One Hipster One Bullit"
Mute Math — "Valium"
OK Go — "I Want You So Bad"
The All-American Rejects — "Sierra's Song"
Anberlin — "A Perfect Tourniquet"

Parachute — "One Small Step"
Sarah Solovay — "Hearts Collide"
