Jan. 1, 2009 came and went for Courtney Love, but that doesn't mean Jan. 1, 2010 will pass without her having released Nobody's Daughter, her long-awaited sophomore album.
Love announced the release date on her Twitter yesterday in her always highly literate style after having ranted for yet another day about... OK, I don't know what.
"one year exactly from when i said it would CARVED IN STONE 010110, Nobodies Daughter DROPS FROM HELL," she wrote.
Or, as was posted on CLtranslated — the Twitter account that makes her tweets easier to understand for all of us who aren't Love:
"ps - NEW YEAR'S DAY, what are you guys doing? BUYING MY RECORD? that's what i thought. if you don't, expect angry @replies ALL YEAR LONG."
Good luck getting it in stores that day, though, since Jan. 1 is a statutory holiday in all countries using the Gregorian calendar with the exception of Israel.
Love originally said last year that Nobody's Daughter would be available for purchase via her website on Jan. 1, 2009. Her "MySpace administrator" published a lengthy explanation the next day, stating that the album had been delayed due to sound issues in the studio where it was recorded.
Love has been working on Nobody's Daughter since leaving rehab in 2005 after admitting to using drugs and thereby violating her probation. Producer Linda Perry and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan helped with the songwriting process. It's still not known what tracks will appear on the album. Love has mentioned over 30 songs she's written over the last few years.
Love also now says Nobody's Daughter sounds like David Bowie's Diamond Dogs, according to Spin.com, and she has previously said it resembled Bob Dylan, R.E.M., Radiohead, U2 and Fleetwood Mac.
Love also said earlier this year that she wanted to release Nobody's Daughter under the Hole moniker, but that isn't going to happen if Hole guitarist Eric Erlandson has anything to say about it.
That certainly didn't stop her from performing under the Hole moniker on Saturday night in New York City, though. Love and Larrikin Love guitarist Micko Larkin played a set of six songs including Hole's "Malibu" and a cover of Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes."
Here's that cover:
