Update: Charlie Watts Not Quitting Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones

UPDATE: The Rolling Stones have issued this official statement:

"Contrary to a fabricated story that ran this morning on a small music web site in Australia, drummer Charlie Watts has not left The Rolling Stones."

Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has reportedly left the band after 46 years.

A source told Undercover.com.au that the drummer, who joined The Rolling Stones in 1963, "will never record or tour with the band again."

Neither The Rolling Stones nor Watts have confirmed the report.

Guitarist Keith Richards apparently had to convince Watts to tour with the band in support of 2005's A Bigger Bang, and the source told the website Charlie Drayton, drummer for Richards' Expensive Winos, will play with the Stones at future gigs and on any albums they may record. Singer Mick Jagger reportedly wants The Rolling Stones to have a very active 2010.

Watts joined The Rolling Stones in 1963 to replace drummer Tony Chapman. Watts didn't look at the gig as a full-time thing, though, and kept his day job for years after joining The Rolling Stones. Watts, who was a jazz drummer prior to joining the band, also contributed artwork to the record sleeve for 1967's Between The Buttons.
