Green Day Want Own Rocky Horror

Green Day want to turn the stage production of American Idiot, based on their 2004 concept album of the same name, into a film... kinda like that other movie musical, the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The American Idiot stage show follows a group of working-class characters who travel "from the suburbs to the city to the Middle East" in search of "redemption in a world filled with frustration."

The play — co-written by Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and Tony Award winning director Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) — premieres at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California this Sept.

Armstrong already has further aspirations for the production, though.

"I thought American Idiot had a lot in common with something like Rocky Horror Picture Show," he told the Associated Press. "It would be great to see a film make out of it someday, too."

Armstrong certainly is aiming high. The movie version of Rocky Horror Picture Show is the longest-running film in history, and is still in limited release nearly 34 years after its premiere.

But I suppose when you disregard RHPS's transsexual aliens, the mad scientist, phallic objects, modern day Frankenstein references and cult status, the two musicals do have a lot in common. Y'know, like music. And acting.
