Newfoundland singer Lori Anna Reid didn't play on U2's new album, No Line On The Horizon, but a recent article by The Telegram in her home province shed some light on why she earned a thank you in the album's liner notes.
The classically trained Reid and producer/musician Daniel Lanois have worked together in the past, according to the article published last Friday. While U2 were in the studio working on what would be the new album, Lanois called Reid when she was in transit between Banff, Alta. and Vancouver and said the band were "initially thinking about doing a record of hymns..."
One of the suggestions Reid gave the acclaimed producer was "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." Lanois took the idea back to the band and they immediately approved it, which served as the creative spark for the song "White As Snow."
"I have a hard time taking credit — I'm just grateful and glad that both Daniel, Bono and the entire band agreed with me that it's a gorgeous hymn," Reid says in the article.
Lanois told the newspaper Reid played him a few of her ideas and he took them to U2 for consideration.
"I recorded a little piano version of it and brought that to the U2 camp,” Lanois told the paper. "She has so much experience singing classical music that it's just embedded in her as an artist. She just has a very clear understanding of how parts interlock."
