Vancouver rock band
Odds (or New Odds) have created a "play" entitled
Good Weird Story based on their history and are considering taking it on the road.
"I think we may have entered the realm of musical theatre," Craig Northey wrote on the band's
website May 31. "We wrote a 'play' of sorts that involves an Odds concert. I would call it a thematic narrative with a multimedia presentation. There isn't really much dance in it besides improvised rock reaction dancing but there is acting, singing, photography, film and the rest... oh... no ceramic art or puppetry."
Northey says he took the idea — which was a way to mark the band's 20th anniversary — and script to Los Angeles where he worked on it with
Kids In The Hall members Bruce McCulloch and Kevin MacDonald. The troupe's director, Jim Millen (with help from Dave Foley), assisted with the technical presentation side of it. Kids In The Hall and Odds have a long association: the band appeared in the Kids In The Hall motion picture
Brain Candy and Northey provided music on some of their recent comedy tours.
The play made its debut last month on Vancouver Island and Northey was thrilled with the result.
"The 'Good Weird Story' is autobiographical and comic and tragic. Feeling Greek. The reaction was incredible and we look forward to getting this thing to small local theatres near you. It will evolve as we go and we look forward to performing it as many times as we can in the future."
There's no word as to when the show will be performed again or how extensive a possible tour would be.
The title refers to the band's 1995 album,
Good Weird Feeling. The band released their last album,
Cheerleader,
as The New Odds last year. They're now allowed to go by the name Odds again.
bruce also directed/starred in the odds' "make you mad" video and kevin, dave and mark were in the "heterosexual man" clip.
