Depeche Mode have cancelled three more shows, bringing their total thus far to nine, as frontman Dave Gahan recovers from severe gastroenteritis.

"Doctors have advised that more time is needed to allow singer, Dave Gahan, to fully recover from his recent illness and ensure that the tour can resume shortly," said a message posted on Wednesday on the Depeche Mode website.

"Depeche Mode apologise to all their fans for this inconvenience and wish Dave a speedy recovery."

Gastroenteritis (which is also known as the "stomach flu," though unrelated to influenza) involves the inflammation of the stomach and small intestine that results in acute diarrhea. Inadequate treatment of the ailment kills an estimated five to eight million people per year around the world and is a leading cause of death among children under five (and U.S. president Zachary Taylor in 1850).

Gahan shouldn't be at risk of getting to that stage since he can afford top medical care. Besides, he's already survived a suicide attempt and a drug overdose.

The latest concerts to be put on hold are in Warsaw, Poland on May 23, Riga, Latvia on May 25 and Vilnius, Lithuania on May 27. Ticket holders should hang on to their tickets until new dates are scheduled or the shows are cancelled for good.

This also applies for previously cancelled concerts in: Athens, Greece; Istanbul, Turkey; Bucharest, Romania; Sofia, Bulgaria; Belgrade, Serbia; and Zagreb, Croatia.

The next scheduled Depeche Mode gig is May 30 at London, England's O2 Arena. The British band's Tour Of The Universe is supposed to cover Europe until mid-July. A July 24 performance at Toronto's Molson Amphitheatre is slated to begin the North American leg of the tour.

Thanks for sticking to the  facts.  Many of the Russian and Polish sites are saying Gahan has everything from heart troubles to bowel  cancer.

Gastroenteritis is not a virus and is therefore not related to the flu.  It is called "stomach flu" because of the accompanying fever.

Whoops! Thanks for catching our error on the "stomach flu." I've just corrected it in the article.
