While Dark Night Of The Soul was only going to get a limited release, Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous and film director David Lynch's brainchild now won't come out commercially at all because of what an unnamed spokesperson for the project calls "an ongoing dispute with EMI."
While the book of Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet) photographs that was to accompany the album will still be available, it will be packaged with "a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: 'For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'"
You can order the package, as well as a poster with a blank CD-R, from the Dark Night Of The Soul website. But if you want to hear the music, you'll have to hit the NPR site, which is streaming the album.
Dark Night Of The Soul features an impressive list of guest contributors and was briefly streaming on the Chrysalismusic blog last week before it was removed.
An art installation featuring music and photos from Dark Night Of The Soul will run at Los Angeles' Michael Kohn Gallery from May 30 to July 11.
