Alanis Morissette will act in the fifth season of the Weeds television series.

The multi-talented, Ottawa-born artist has been cast as Dr. Audra Kitson, an obstetrician who treats central character Nancy Botwin (Mary-Louise Parker). Botwin, a widowed housewife-turned-marijuana-dealer, meets Kitson after becoming pregnant with the child of corrupt Tijuana, Mexico mayor Esteban Reyes (Demian Bichir). Morissette will appear in at least seven of the season's 13 episodes, and may return for Weeds' sixth season.

Weeds' new season will premiere on Showtime in the U.S. on June 8 and on Canada's Showcase this fall.

Morissette's role may call for some nudity related to her character's romantic pursuit of Botwin's brother-in-law Andy (Justin Kirk). This shouldn't pose too much of a challenge to the 34-year-old Canadian Music Industry Hall Of Fame inductee, who donned a flesh-coloured bodysuit at 2004's Juno Awards in protest of what she referred to as "hypocritical United States censorship." And let's not forget the "Thank U" video.

Morissette made her TV debut in 1986 on the children's show You Can't Do That On Television, and has since appeared in such programs as Curb Your Enthusiasm, Sex And The City, Nip/Tuck and Degrassi: The Next Generation. She played God in the Kevin Smith-directed film, Dogma, and has done some stage acting.

Morissette's seventh full-length studio album, Flavors Of Entanglement, was released last May. It was named best pop album at this year's Juno Awards.
