Gonzales Attempts Longest Concert World Record

The Guinness World Records book contains such useless categories as most gloves worn on one hand at once and heaviest weight dangled from a swallowed sword. But if Gonzales has his way, he could hold the record for longest concert by an individual on May 18.

Gonzales (real name Jason Charles Beck) will attempt to break Indian Prasanna Gudi's 26-hour, 12-minute performance record by trying to play for 27 hours at the Cine 13 Theatre in Paris, France. The show will start at 11:30 p.m. on May 16 and hopefully end in the wee hours of the morning of May 18.

"I will do this to push my musical and physical stamina," Gonzales says. "I believe music is part art, part athletics and this 27-hour concert will demonstrate both aspects."

Gonzales will play 300-or-so "recognizable songs from all eras and styles of music, in new and surprising arrangements" and says his goal is to set the new mark "without sounding like a broken record."

A Guinness adjudicator will be on hand to watch. Gonzales will have to undergo drug testing at the event and will get a five-minute break each hour. A documentary crew will film the performance.

You'll be able to stream the show on Gonzales' website.

Gonzales' most recent album, Soft Power, came out last year.

If Gonzales succeeds, he'll join the ranks of other Canadian Guinness record holders like Mike Moraal:

(How the hell did this guy figure out he could do this in the first place?)
