Downloadable Wilco Cover Of Woody Guthrie Available

Wilco tell Barack Obama how to deal with banks
Fresh from naming their new studio effort Wilco (The Album), Wilco placed a downloadable cover of Woody Guthrie's 1964 song "The Jolly Banker" on their website on Friday.

The download was originally available with three options for payment or non-payment, but that section of the site has since been removed. One suggested a minimum donation of two dollars, while another stated, "Sorry, I'm unemployed/underemployed or otherwise broke. I'll download the track and I'll make it up to you later, I promise."

The third option was worded this way: "I am/was a banker/hedge fund manager/credit default swap trader. I know times are tough, but I’m just fine thank you." Their suggested minimum donation was $100.

All of the proceeds from the download sales will go directly to the Woody Guthrie Foundation And Archives, which preserves, promotes and perpetuates the late singer/songwriter's social, political and cultural values by making his archives available for research and by creating public outreach and educational programs.

Wilco, who visited Guthrie's work alongside Billy Bragg on 1998's Mermaid Avenue and 2000's Mermaid Avenue Vol. II, will release their new album on June 30.
