Quebec metal innovators Voivod will release Infini on CD and in a double vinyl package on June 23 through Sonic Unyon in Canada and Relapse Records in the U.S.
The follow-up to 2006's Katorz features the last 13 songs written by Voivod's late guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, who passed away from colon cancer in 2005. It may be the last album released under the Voivod name.
All the guitar demos originally recorded by D'Amour on a laptop computer in his bachelor apartment appear as they were with no overdubs. Drummer Michel "Away" Langevin tracked his parts in Montreal with longtime engineer Glen Robinson (Gwar, Ramones).
The recordings were then sent to ex-Metallica bassist Jason Newsted at San Francisco's Fantasy Studios, where he laid down the bass tracks with Enrique Gonzalez Muller. Denis "Snake" Belanger then recorded his vocals with Robinson in Montreal. The album was mixed in San Francisco by Newsted and Gonzalez Muller.
While Newsted remains a member of Voivod, original bassist Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault and Martyr guitarist Dan Mongrain will join Langevin and Belanger on tour as Voivod this summer.
"If we don't play live again, then the songs die with Piggy and he wouldn't want that," says Belanger. "His genius deserves to be heard by new and lifelong fans."
