NIN Apple iPhone Application Coming

Trent Reznor is preparing his latest free download for Nine Inch Nails fans: a free iPhone and iTouch application called NIN Access.

The application, which will be released when Apple approves it (which could happen any day), will let fans access Nine Inch Nails photos, videos, message boards and music.

Reznor told Wired magazine that he got the idea when he noticed Nine Inch Nails fans were taking photos outside venues and broadcasting them on their iPhones. Reznor's collaborator, Rob Sheridan, told the magazine that the iPhone application is "kind of like Twitter within the Nine Inch Nails network.

"You can post a message or photo by location, and if you're at a show, you can see conversations between other people who are right there."

Since Nine Inch Nails' website features a Google Earth plug-in, the iPhone application's Nearby tab will let users post messages and photos to the site from their iPhones. Those items will then appear on Google Earth.

Sheridan told Wired that Reznor has plans to integrate a Wiki into the Nine Inch Nails website, which is now almost completely user-driven and allows people to upload items to Flickr and YouTube so they appear on the NIN website.

Reznor told the magazine his recent experiments with social media are the result of being frustrated with traditional record labels. Now that he's releasing albums through his own The Null Corporation, he can do what he wants.

"Anyone who's an executive at a record label does not understand what the internet is, how it works, how people use it, how fans and consumers interact — no idea," Reznor said. "I'm surprised they know how to use email.

"They have built a business around selling plastic discs, and nobody wants plastic discs any more."
