Coldplay Deny Plagiarizing Joe Satriani Song

Coldplay denied copying part of Joe Satriani's "If I Could Fly" in their Grammy Award-winning hit "Viva La Vida" on Monday.

Chris Martin and company filed papers at a Los Angeles federal court that said "If I Could Fly" "lacks originality" and there weren't enough similarities between the two tracks for Satriani to ask for damages.

Satriani sued Coldplay in December, claiming that "Viva La Vida" "copied and incorporated substantial original potions" from "If I Could Fly." Satriani stated he wanted "any and all profits" Coldplay made from "Viva La Vida," which garnered them a Grammy Award for record of the year and was a #1 hit in the U.K., U.S., Netherlands and Israel and hit the top 10 in 13 other countries.

Coldplay previously released a statement in which they said any similarities between "Viva La Vida" and "If I Could Fly" were "entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him."

Satriani said he was seeking a jury trial for the case in December. But his lawyer, Howard King, said in a Billboard.com article that Coldplay's rebuttal was "typical for copyright infringement cases" and could have been solved out of court.
