Doors Documentary Coming

A trailer is making the rounds online for When You're Strange: A Film About The Doors. It's the first feature length documentary about the rock band featuring singer Jim Morrison, guitarist Bobby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and drummer John Densmore.

When You're Strange premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January with narrations by director Tom DiCillo. Johnny Depp (Pirates Of The Caribbean, Edward Scissorhands) has apparently signed on to narrate an updated version of the film, according to Entertainment Weekly's website. The documentary, which takes its name from The Doors' "People Are Strange," features footage of Morrison, Krieger, Manzarek and Densmore shot between 1965 and 1971. It tells The Doors' story from Morrison's days as a film student at the University Of California at Los Angeles where he met Manzarek, to the band's career and Morrison's death in a Paris, France bathtub in 1971.

Manzarek, who fiercely opposed Oliver Stone's 1991 feature film, The Doors, which starred Val Kilmer as Morrison, has called When You're Strange the "anti-Oliver Stone."

"This will be the true story of The Doors," he told Billboard.com.

A theatrical release date has yet to be announced, though Billlboard.com reported in December that Rhino Records would release the film's soundtrack this summer. More information about When You're Strange can be found at the film's website.
