Quest For Fire
It seems Toronto's Quest For Fire got a little creative when answering their CHARTattack CMW '09 preview questionnaire.

Guitarist Chad Ross shared an entertaining tale involving Default, stolen booze, and vomit that just wasn't true.

"We never played with Default," admits the apologetic Ross. "But if we did, we would have definitely drunk all of their beer."

Ross' deception is unlikely to have any negative impact on the quartet's upcoming CHARTattack.com Rock 'N' Roll Report Card grade. Heck, the thoroughness of his lie may even earn them a few bonus marks.

Quest For Fire are writing material for the follow-up to last year's acclaimed self-titled debut, and their CMW gig will include a mix of new and old hazy, psychedelic-infused rockers. Ross jokes they've crafted a special track in honour of their showcase at the music industry-driven event.

"We're working on a new 45-minute song called 'Brown Nose' especially for CMW. It's a subliminal song."

Quest For Fire will record their sophomore disc in April at Toronto's Hallamusic. Fans can expect to hear the finished results in 2010. The act are signed to the Storyboard label in Canada and recently inked a deal with Tee Pee Records. The New York-based imprint will issue their 2008 effort in the U.S. and Europe in June, and the band hope to tour both extensively in support of the release.

"It's weird," says Ross. "Tee Pee is putting out our debut around the same time we'll be putting the finishing touches on the second LP.

"It's a blessing in disguise, though. It just means we'll always be one step ahead of ourselves."

Quest For Fire aren't especially fond of the stoner rock description that often accompanies their music, but their affiliation with Tee Pee's "420-friendly" roster is unlikely to help Quest For Fire rid themselves of the tag anytime soon.

"'Stoner rock' reminds us of Samantha Fox posters and Cypress Hill ashtrays," Ross says.

"All of us just bonded on our common love of classic psych, rock and garage. When we started jamming, it was collective art. The sound came really fast and naturally."

Along with playing CMW, the group will perform three more Ontario shows before heading into the studio. Ross is especially looking forward to their Peterborough date and already has post-show plans at The Montreal House.

"There's a vet that drinks at the Mo Ho in Peterborough who owes me a pint of Coors Light. He can expect that I will collect."
