A group of angry Iron Maiden fans rioted before the British band's concert in Bogota, Colombia on Saturday.

Police arrested more than 100 people after what they described as "a group of malcontents who wanted to enter without tickets" tried to gain entry to Simon Bolivar Park. The protestors threw rocks and police fired tear gas at them in response, according to BBC News. At least one police officer was injured in the skirmish and needs reconstructive facial surgery.

A report from Bogota police states that 40 of the original 111 people arrested are still in custody and will have to pay for damage to traffic lights and signs in the area.

The riot didn't deter Iron Maiden's performance, which more than 25,000 people attended, though it has prompted local authorities to debate if the city will host any future heavy metal concerts.

Iron Maiden are touring South America in support of last year's Somewhere Back In Time best-of compilation. You can see their hopefully riot-free concerts here:

Iron Maiden's manager, Rod Smallwood, responded today with a post on the band's official website, saying the incident was "wildly exaggerated":

"The 'riots' were basically a lot of kids trying to break into the Simon Bolivar Park to see the show and the park has a big perimeter to protect. There is a large military presence for all concerts in Bogota as can be seen in our forthcoming movie Flight 666.  However in the last 13 months we have played 2 fantastic concerts there to over 75,000 passionate fans at this same venue, Simon Bolivar Park. Neither performance was at all affected by the incidents of people outside trying to break in.  None of the enjoyment of the show or safety of the band or our audiences was at all compromised."

The opening shots of this BBC report don't really seem to be over-exaggerating the riotous behaviour... What do you think?

I still can't get past the part where it's necessary to have the military at all concerts in Colombia.

The military patrol the streets pretty much everywhere in Colombia. You get used to seeing the machine guns pretty quickly.

I get that and I understand why, but it still weirds me out even thinking about it.
