Spinal Tap Go Acoustic

Spinal Tap

Spinal Tap will tour North America this spring and will hopefully have their acoustic guitars turned up to 11.

David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), who appeared in the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap with keyboardist "Caucasian" Jerry Vanston (C.J. Vanston), will tour from April to May to celebrate the film's 25th anniversary. They announced the tour at a press conference that you can see here:

Spinal Tap will play acoustic sets without their wigs and costumes, but promise to perform music from Spinal Tap's This Is Spinal Tap and Break Like The Wind albums. They'll also play material by The Folksmen, the subject of 2003's A Mighty Wind mockumentary.

Spinal Tap won't have a drummer with them on tour, which is a good thing because that leaves out the possibility of yet another tubthumper spontaneously combusting, having a gardening accident or choking to death on his own vomit like those other ones.

"Primarily, we're doing the trio tour because it's so easy," McKean said at the press conference. "We just have these wooden instruments and we don't have to wear things on our heads. Well... you know, unless we're playing a temple or something, or a mosque."

The dates come in advance of a new Spinal Tap album that will hit stores on May 26. It will feature the "lost studio versions" of songs performed in This Is Spinal Tap as well as new material.

Tickets for the trek — dubbed Unwigged & Unplugged: An Evening With Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer — go on sale through Ticketmaster and Live Nation on Friday.
