Deftones Return Without Chi Cheng

Deftones

Deftones will return to the stage in April to play their first show since a Nov. 3 car accident in Santa Clara, Calif. left bassist Chi Cheng in a coma.

Vocalist Chino Moreno, guitarist Stephen Carpenter, drummer Abe Cunningham and DJ Frank Delgado will perform with ex-Quicksand bassist Sergio Vega at the Bamboozle Left festival at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine, Calif. on April 5.

Vega previously filled in for Cheng in 1999.

"Chi always wanted to keep working and never slow down, which is why we feel confident in returning to the stage at Bamboozle in April," the band said in a statement. "Chi would want it, and we want to make sure we're keeping his legacy alive."

Cheng s still in a coma and his mother and bandmates have since been writing updates about his condition on the Deftones' studio blog. Cheng was transferred to a brain rehabilitation hospital on Dec. 9, but his condition hasn't changed much.

"Our fallen comrade has not made significant progress as of late, but continues to fight on from his accident," says the most recent entry. "Doctors are working feverishly to return our brother to us, and we continue to hold out hope and faith that Chi returns to the life he has waiting for him and can join us on stage once again."

Deftones have been working on their sixth studio album, which is tentatively titled Eros and expected to be released this year. Their last album was 2006's Saturday Night Wrist.
