Matthew Good has recorded a good deal of material for the follow-up to 2007's Hospital Music, and has taken the time to update his fans about it.
Good has been holed up in Vancouver's Warehouse Studios with guitarist Stuart Cameron and drummer Blake Manning, and the sessions have apparently been busy and stressful.
"Things are progressing nicely, and I truly believe that this record may very well take a lot of fans by surprise in some ways," Good wrote in a Jan. 18 blog post.
While Good has tracked most of the guitar, bass and drum parts for the album, tentatively titled Vancouver, he said he hadn't done the vocals yet — but would probably start working on them the next day.
"At this point, unlike the last record, I am still not sure how it's all going to end up, which is both exciting and terrifying at the same time," he wrote.
While Good played most of the guitar parts on Hospital Music, sessions for the new album have seen him tracking all the bass and rhythm guitar parts and "a handful" of leads. He says Cameron has handled some of the other guitar elements and provided new parts not included on the original demos.
"Recording this record has been almost diametrically opposed to the recording of Hospital Music — a far more stressful affair for me, though even that isn't without excitement," Good wrote. "I have today off, but the next 14 days will be straight through given everything that has yet to be done. So here's to drowsy success."
Good has also been using his Twitter page to keep fans in the loop. He's posted frequent updates, including "I am out of my head exhausted," "Guitar, guitar, and more guitar. This record may come out in 2012" and "Recording and puking don't go well together."
