Bryan Ferry sang that "Love is the drug" with Roxy Music, and Amy Winehouse couldn't agree more.
Winehouse told U.K. tabloid News Of The World that she's kicked drugs and is in love with 21-year-old Josh Bowman, who previously said he and the singer weren't involved. Winehouse told the tabloid that she hadn't touched drugs since she arrived in St. Lucia at the beginning of 2009 and was working hard to kick her habit.
"Before I came out here, I looked at a photo of myself in the newspaper and was horrified," Winehouse said.
"My skin was a spotty mess and I was so pale and skinny. I thought to myself, 'Girl, you got to sort yourself out or you'll be dead soon.'
"I was depressed, doing drugs and had no life in me at all. Coming here has changed everything. We're having a great time together along with all [of] Josh's family and friends and I just don't want the holiday to end.
"Home is hell for me. I've escaped from it. There are drugs everywhere. I can't do anything without everyone thinking I'm off my head on drugs, although half the time they were right, I WAS.
"But here, I feel so calm and peaceful and for the first time I can definitely say I AM off the drugs. I haven't touched anything since I arrived and I feel the best I have in years."
But just because Winehouse says she's kicked drugs, it doesn't mean she's stopped drinking. News Of The World reports that Winehouse often staggers around drunk at the exclusive resort where she's staying and wanders around its beach topless, to the disdain of most of the hotel's guests.
Winehouse admits she hasn't stopped drinking, but says she feels better than she has in years.
"It's like I've stepped onto a new planet and nothing can harm me here," she said. "At home, I seem to get in with the wrong people and just get myself into trouble.
"Yes I've been getting pissed here but, compared to the states I get into back in London, this is the best behaved I've been in years."
Winehouse wasn't on her best behaviour when the U.K.'s The Sun tabloid reported that she threw a glass of water over a fellow diner's head at a restaurant at the resort because she thought she had been insulted.
"Amy misunderstood a conversation and wrongly believed a slight was made," her spokesperson said. "The matter has been resolved."
Winehouse told News Of The World that she was much happier with Bowman than she'd been with her jailed husband Blake Fielder-Civil, who recently admitted he'd gotten her hooked on drugs.
Vacation is about escape, and sooner or later everyone has to return to reality. It's one thing to stay off drugs during happy times, but totally another to remain clean when the going gets tough.
Winehouse's happy times with Bowman ended this weekend when he returned home to the U.K. Winehouse was apparently so upset about his departure that she flew her father, Mitch Winehouse, to St. Lucia so he could keep her company. She has apparently extended her stay by a week because she's enjoying St. Lucia so much.
"All I've done is read books, sunbathe and drink cocktails," Winehouse told News Of The World. "But it's made me feel like concentrating on my career again.
"Most nights I've done a few songs on the piano for a laugh but I'm starting to think about recording again. I want to capture how happy I am right now in some new songs."
Fielder-Civil has apparently filed for divorce from the singer, which Winehouse was already rumoured to have done last year. According to Henri Brandman, Fielder-Civil's lawyer, his client is set to file for divorce from Winehouse on account of her infidelity with Bowman.
"I can confirm that I have been instructed to commence divorce proceedings on the grounds of Amy's adultery," Brandman said in a statement.
We're pretty sure Winehouse won't care about that, given that she told News Of The World that Fielder-Civil was crap in bed and she always felt "dead" while she was screwing him. At least now she knows she can do better.
