We just checked some of the results of this year's Golden Toque Award for best Canadian album in our 14th annual year-end readers' poll.

We're shocked to see that David Usher's Wake Up And Say Goodbye is leading the way with a whopping 76 votes. The former Moist frontman's closest competitors are Wintersleep, whose Welcome To The Night Sky has 16 votes. That's followed by The Weakerthans' Reunion Tour with 14 and Wolf Parade's At Mount Zoomer with 11.

Why does Usher have so many votes? We've opened the poll up to unlimited voting, but he's been leading since we put the darn poll up. Did people not get the memo about it being 2008, not 1998? Where's the usual legion of Simple Plan fans? Their self-titled album so far has no votes. How is this possible?

You can vote as many times as you please in the poll until January. In the meantime, please feel free to post a link to our readers' poll on whatever fan site you choose. We enjoy internet troop surges to our site.

It might have something to do with the community that David Usher has created at davidusher.com with his blog and social networking sites. He has engaged his audience and they are invested in return. He is changing along with the industry. Would make a great story in Chart actually!

You are right...David Usher was around in 1998...and here he is still going strong in 2008...and... he'll most likely be around in 2018. True talent continually reinvents itself and David has staying power. His music and lyrics provide such a relief from the endless stream of copycat artists out there today. You should really give his album a listen...you might find it is modern, inventive, and represents what sets many Canadian artists apart from the rest of the world.

i keep thinking maybe those guys who wrote the review and article are fresh off from high school or something....chart attack's "writers" or "journalists" should learn how to write professionally...i wouldn't step down into their level...that's just to show they are in favour with other bands that sound the same vocally and lyrically...."they" have their own opinions but anyone can agree that david's music is well defined from others...so you want to read a fair review from a well known site?

David Usher couldn't be a less relevant Canadian artist in 2008.

David Usher is not relevant you say?  Who are you BTW?  Who are we?  We are just people who enjoy his music and his concerts, you have a problem with that?  People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.  You don't like him or his music or whatever, fine, other people do, smart intelligent people BTW, get over it buddy.

ILoveYouToo, you're probably one of those overly dramatic teenagers that sit in their room crying to Simple Plan and MCR half the day before putting in plastic vampire teeth and reading Twilight. Be quiet, please. :)

WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE? I can't speak for all, but I am simply an addict of great music, which I find is hard to come by these days. David Usher is the only musician I've ever listened to who never disappoints me. I can honestly say I love each and every one of his songs, including everything he did in Moist. He's brilliant and deserves a lot more respect.

Hey everyone, it's christmas! let's not get nasty and start in with personal attacks. ILoveYouToo was undoubtedly just making a rhetorical comment when they asked who are you people. it's actually not a bad question when you think about it.

Anyway, music is subjective and apart from what people might argue over artistic merit, we can agree that as a person we wish David the best. Which in his case, best is very likely managing the organic produce section of a Sobey's sometime in 2009.

I like when they showed the video for “Push” on Beavis & Butthead. Watching Beavis sing “fade away, fade away” still makes me laugh. If the David Usher internet army is looking for inspiration through his lyrics, might i suggest those.

why tell others to quit attacking when you keep doing it? you expect them not to defend themself?? and not everyone celebrates christmas you are rude to think that way so quit harrassing others! if you don't want people being rude to you you should quit being so mean to them and the things they like. there is no reason for any of you to be attacking each other we all are entitled to think what we like and everyone should be respectful even if they don't agree

Happy holidays to all.  Remember, it's all in fun here.  I'm more used to sports sites where what has been said above is very, very mild to what sports fans say to each other, this is actually almost curteous in nature compared with sports to be honest.  I do appreciate the possible different meaning of "who are you people" but referring to David Usher as not relevant, I must disagree.   He is someone who writes interesting and thought provoking lyrics, perhaps not screaming like some young bands do and few if any swear words.  But he is married and raising 2 children and who he is now in his early 40's is not who he was in his early 20's, like most of us.  That is very relevant to society and helping shape Canada.  While you might not be in his space, I think you should respect his space.  I just find for myself, I tend to not comment on things which don't interest me, for example I don't go into the Mixed Martial Arts site and say that sport is not to my liking.  I avoid it and go to the sports I like.  To me, that is just plain netiquette from where I come from.  Cheers!
