It's every do-gooding indie music fan's wet dream: a two-CD collection to raise money for AIDS research that includes songs from The Decemberists, Spoon, Iron & Wine, My Morning Jacket, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power and many others.
There's lots of impressive Canadian talent on Dark Was The Night, too. Feist, Arcade Fire, Buck 65, The New Pornographers and Kevin Drew contributed to the Beggars Banquet album, which will be released on Feb. 17.
Do you want collaborations? Dark Was The Night has lots of those, too. Dirty Projectors and David Byrne, Antony and The National's Bryce Dessner, Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch, and Blonde Redhead and Devastations are among those who teamed up for the album.
The sales proceeds from the compilation will go to The Red Hot Organization, a group dedicated to fighting AIDS through pop culture. Red Hot has produced 14 albums, related television programs and media events that have raised almost $7 million for AIDS relief around the world since 1989.
