Rufus Wainwright is openly and flamboyantly gay, but he hasn't jumped on board the legal same-sex union bandwagon because he has no interest in getting married.

Unlike Tegan And Sara, Slash and other celebrities, Wainwright didn't protest the recent passing of California's Proposition 8, which reversed a previous law that permitted gay marriage. But that doesn't mean he thinks that governments should have a say on how couples conduct themselves.

"Oddly enough, I'm actually not a huge gay marriage supporter," Wainwright told NYPress.com. "I personally don't want to get married but I think that any law or amendment to the constitution that deals with sex and love should just be banned in general.

"I don't think any government should encroach on what goes on in the bedroom at all. Frankly, if you want to marry a dog, why don't you go ahead and marry a dog, I don't care. I'm a complete libertarian and so I really disagree with it."

If Wainwright ever changes his mind about same-sex marriage, he can take advantage of his Canadian citizenship and make his wedding vows legally north of the 49th parallel.

Wainwright's Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall was nominated for a best traditional pop vocal album Grammy Award earlier this month.

Wainwright performed a Christmas show at New York City's Carnegie Hall with his sister Martha Wainwright, mother Kate McGarrigle and aunt Anna McGarrigle on Dec. 10. He has these U.S. dates scheduled for the new year:

Feb. 12 Red Bank, NJ @ Count Basie Theater
Feb. 13 Montclair, NJ @ Wellmont Theater
Feb. 14 Philadelphia, PA @ Kimmel Center
Feb. 21 Kansas City, MO @ Uptown Theater
