MuchMusic Cancel Going Coastal

Maybe we shouldn't have opened our big mouths.

We wrote last week that Going Coastal and Nardwuar (who contributed his interviews to the program) were the only good things MuchMusic had left after it axed The NewMusic, one of its longest-running programs. Well, Much has now canned Going Coastal, too.

"It's horrible that a show that's been around since 1986 is going off the air, but I'm fine," host Lauren Toyota told Georgia Straight magazine. "I'm excited to move on and try to find something better."

Toyota plans to contribute freelance pieces to MuchMusic.

Toyota and Going Coastal east coast correspondent Paul Brothers were among those left without work at MuchMusic when parent company CTVglobemedia recently axed 105 jobs. The final episode of Going Coastal aired on Nov. 30.

Going Coastal was originally two separate programs, Much West and Much East, which focused on music on Canada's two coasts. They were amalgamated into Going Coastal in 2001. Chris Nelson was the show's longest running host, having helmed the program from 2000 until 2007.

Previous Much East and Much West hosts included Mike Campbell, Terry David Mulligan, Jay Mirus and current MuchMoreMusic VJ Matt Wells.
