Stephen Colbert has declared war on Kanye West.

Colbert launched the attack on West on Monday night's episode of The Colbert Report because West's album sits at #1 on the iTunes sales chart while A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All! is at #16.

"I would like to give thanks to everyone who helped make the soundtrack to my Christmas special, A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All!, the number one selling album on iTunes," he said. "I would like to, but I can't."

Colbert then lashed out at West, calling him a "sunglasses display mannequin," and made fun of West's ego.

"Now, I am a humble person," Colbert said. "When I finally have my name etched onto the moon, it won't be in a fancy font like Palatino. No, I'm using Courier, the working man's typeface.

"That is why I am so furious that an egomaniac like Kanye is beating me. The man has no shame. Listen to this recent quote: 'I will go down as the voice of this generation of this decade...'

"Sir, you are not the voice of this generation of this decade. In fact, with all the auto-tuning on your records, you're barely the voice of your own albums!

"Nation, there is only one way to stop Kanye West's arrogance, and that is with my arrogance. I have to knock Kanye West's album from the number one spot on iTunes and replace it with A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift Of All! This is war, and I am calling for a surge."

Colbert is encouraging fans to flood iTunes at 5 p.m. EST on Wednesday to buy his Christmas album and propel it to the top spot.

West updated his Twitter status on Tuesday to "Who the fuck is Stephen Colbert?"

Colbert launched a war on The Decemberists in November 2006. He accused the band of stealing his idea after The Decemberists asked their fans to make green screen videos for "O Valencia!" Colbert had announced his own green screen challenge that summer, and told his fans to sabotage The Decemberists' campaign. The war of words escalated into a full-fledged "guitar duel" in which Decemberists guitarist Chris Funk appeared on The Colbert Report to battle with the host.

All of this Colbert vs. West stuff makes us excited because it's setting up an inevitable televised rap battle. We just wonder if West's head can fit through the studio doors.

Jon Stewart is better.

John Stewart is great, but I don't think he's better. Stewart can't get through half of his jokes without giggling in anticipation of the punchline. Colbert can deliver on his character's craziness time and time again, which I think makes him funnier than Stewart.

I like them both for different things. They've both got their own merits.

To me, The Daily Show is more of a parody of actual news coverage, whereas Colbert parodying pundits like Bill O'Reilly.

And that's exactly why I like both of 'em.
