Billy Corgan Vs. Audiences Everywhere

It's probably ill-advised to do an anniversary tour where you don't play any of your hits and you yell at your audience, but Billy Corgan has been doing both during the Smashing Pumpkins' current 20th anniversary tour.

Corgan has been using "Everything Is Beautiful," which the Pumpkins have been playing during the encore of some shows, to take the opportunity to rant at his audience and diss its city in the lyrics. He's even turned the microphone over to hecklers or crowd members so they can either yell at him or tell him they love him.

But nothing quite matches the clip below. During "Everything Is Beautiful" at a recent show at the Chicago Theatre, Corgan took the time to enlighten the audience about how he masturbates and thinks of Sarah Palin (disgusting and just wrong), but can't get off and has to think of the audience to get anywhere (ewwwww!).

Corgan loves professional wrestling, so we're calling him out as trying to play heel (the bad guy), especially when he starts asking the audience members why they're angry at him.

"You know, for 20 years, we've tried to make people happy and failed again and again," he says in the video. "It's so confusing.

"We're so good at it. It's like we don't play music. Do we not play music? Is that what it is? Is it because I don't put a big smile on my face? What is it? Is it the funny voice? What is it? How come people just aren't happy with us?"

I'm willing to bet it has something to do with the fact that your anniversary tour is completely absent of hits and that you've been antagonistic towards your audiences throughout the tour, Billy. Let's not forget that earlier in the tour when a fan gave Corgan the finger, the frontman invited him up on stage to ask why he had cursed at him with his digit. The fan said it was because he sucked. Corgan called the fan "James Iha." All these things might have something to do with it.

Here's Corgan's latest outburst:

Here's another from earlier on the tour in New York City:

Billy Corgan is a class-A D-bag. Tho, I appreciate the idea that he's actually pulling an Andy Kaufman on the audience because eventually Kaufman died. Too soon?

This is a direct rebuttal to Harper's idiotic and factually incorrect criticism from the pumpkin fan base.

We are not apologist, we simply despise sites/critics who presume to be a mouthpiece for us. The pumpkin fanbase is a diverse and dedicated group of people. We don't suffer from groupthink, we have fans who varying levels of appreciation for different aspects of the band. Some of us prefer the pre-reunion Pumpkins, some of us prefer the new mach 2 pumpkins, some of us think its a give and take and some of us like it all. The one thing we all agree on: the press and indie sites never understood us or the band "then" so they can't presume to understand us "now". It's a dysfunctional family but its our family - you're just a guest at best. So, in others word, "fuck off".

Long time reader first time poster, why > this is the worst piece of journalism I think i've ever been privy too.

The Smashing Pumpkins’ combined two-night setlist includes “1979?, “Bullet with Butterfly Wings”, “Today”, “Tonight, Tonight”, “Disarm”, “Cherub Rock”, “Zero”, “Ava Adore”, “Landslide”, “Eye”, and “Tarantula” — all told, that is eleven of the band’s seventeen top-10 modern rock hits.

Furthermore, Ms. Harper’s story from “earlier in the tour” is in fact a story from her imagination. In neither of the incidents involving an angry fan did the fan tell Corgan that “he sucked”; what the fan in New York said “sucked” was not Corgan but was the previous night’s show.

Did you actually go to a show, or just get your information from comments on youtube? It would be interesting to hear one thing about the actual music they're playing you dolt.

How the hell do these "journalists" get away with posting this shit? Not only has she obviously not been to any of these shows herself, but she didn't even bother to take a minute to look at a recent set-list. She didn't even get the encounter with the fan at the DC show remotely correct. Does CHARTattack even have editors?
