STP To Release New Material?

Stone Temple Pilots have recorded new material, but they don't know whether they'll be able to release it because two of their members are being sued by their former record label.

Atlantic Records filed a lawsuit earlier this year against frontman Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz. The lawsuit says the pair are still under contract with the label, but the two men have threatened to stop performing under that agreement unless Atlantic changes it. The suit also claims that Stone Temple Pilots must record another album for the label — their seventh — plus two more if the label decides it wants to continue to do business with them.

"It's pretty fucked up, actually," Weiland told MTV News. "I don't know who we would record for. I'm not into recording for Atlantic Records, and there are some legal issues there.

"Originally, I was told — and I was told for years — that we were free from Atlantic. I don't know how it is that Dean [DeLeo, guitar] and Robert [DeLeo, bass] are free from [Atlantic] and Eric and I are not.

"I have no interest in making a record for a major label. If we were going to make a record, I would want to do it in a way that was much more original and in a more creative fashion."

Weiland said in an interview with WBCN TV last month that Stone Temple Pilots had a written a "boat load of new songs" for an album that could be out sometime in 2009.

Weiland's sophomore solo release, Happy In Galoshes, is due out on Nov. 25.
