The now-bankrupt Suge Knight is no stranger to being taken to court for judgements that force him to pay millions of dollars to other people, but now he's taken Kanye West to court.
Knight (real name Marion Knight, Jr.) filed for bankruptcy on Oct. 30 and, as part of that filing, he's suing West for at least $130,000 U.S. Knight alleges that West and some of his friends let people smuggle a gun past security at a party before the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, Fla. An unknown person shot Knight in the leg at the party.
"It was reasonably foreseeable to defendants that the party would present a dangerous environment with the possibility of weapons (including firearms) being used by or against party guests given the well-known feuds that have at times pitched East Coast rap and hip-hop stars against West Coast rap and hip-hop stars, some of whom would be attending the party with their associates," the suit reads, before adding, "certain hip-hop artists who were invited to the party... were known not to be friendly to Mr. Knight."
Wait a second. Why is West inviting people to a party when he knows they may be shot? That sounds like a bad host to me... Plus, if Knight knew there would be guns at the party, why is it surprising to him that someone shot him? So it's OK if someone else gets shot at a party, just not Suge Knight?
Of course, West is known for having feuds. He dislikes criticism, photographers and dressing room floors, for example.
Knight claims a bone in his leg was shattered during the shooting. This required surgery and he says it led to physical and mental pain and loss of income. Knight also says he lost a $135,000 diamond earring at the party, which an employee said he found and would return to him. That employee never returned the diamond stud, and Knight thinks that "employee" really worked for West or one of the other defendants.
Knight says he wants the earring returned to him, since he's been "deprived of the use and enjoyment of it" since it was lost. According to TMZ.com, Knight has worked out a deal that will let him keep a percentage of any money he may get from the lawsuit.
Knight's belongings were auctioned off this summer.
